Have you ever wondered why do people cry? Why do our eyes start watering when we are sad or happy or in pain?
The Terminator: Why do you cry?
John Connor: You mean people?
The Terminator: Yes
John Connor: I don't know. We just cry. You know when it hurts.
The Terminator: Pain causes it?
John Connor: No, it's when there is nothing wrong with you, but you hurt anyway. You get it?
The Terminator: No.
I am sure you must have some idea as to which movie these dialogs are from. You are right, it's from 'The Terminator 2: Judgment Day'. That time 'John Connor' has no proper explanation as to why people cry. According to him, people cried when they were hurt. Not necessarily. People also cry when they are sad or when they are in too much pain or when there is some kind of irritation in the eyes. They also cry when they are happy. There are several other reasons which will all answer your (as well as The Terminators) question of why do people cry when they are sad, or when they are happy or when they laugh or even, when they cry for no reason.
Types of Tears
Before going into details, let us first see what are the three main kinds of tears that humans shed. The three kinds of tears produced are the basal tears, the reflex tears and the emotional tears. The basal tears are produced in order to lubricate the eye and keep it moist and clean. The second tear, the reflex tears are produced when there is some kind of irritation in our eyes. They are different from basal tears. The chemical composition of these tears is much different from the former. This is why the dust particles in our eyes can be removed quickly by this tear than the basal tears. The emotional tears, as the name suggests, are produced when we are either happy, or sad or laughing. Our body produces emotional tears even when we are physically hurt, because or body is not tuned to differentiate between emotional pain and physical pain. These tears contain more of manganese and this is the one that is responsible for the temperament of the human mind and the tears even give out prolactin and both these together balances the emotion level in our body and thus after we have had a good cry, we feel much better.
What Makes Us Cry
People cry because of several reasons some of which you already are aware of and even sometimes due to no reason too, people cry. If you want to know why we are happy or sad or cry, then given below are some of the reasons.
The emotional tears usually produce manganese and prolactin, which is a particular hormone that is present in the human body. This hormone is present in a larger amount in women than in men. This hormone stimulates lactation and it also calms down mental stress. Hence, when you are sad, then a quick bout of crying really calms you down.
While cutting onions, tears stream down our eyes because the onions contain amino acids sulfloxides, which when mixed with the allinases enzyme that is present in the skin of the onion, forms sulphenic acid. While cutting the onion, the sulphenic acid reacts with the oxygen and forms syn-propanethial-s-oxide, which causes irritation in our eyes and that is what releases the reflex tears.
Another reason as to why do we cry is because through these tears, we want to express something. Wherever you go, you face language barriers, but emotional barrier is something that one will never face no matter where you are. This means of communication is the same everywhere. Whether we laugh or cry or whether we are in pain, our brain triggers off emotional tears and we start crying.
If you ask how often do people cry, then it would be quite often but as we know, men cry less than women. Yes, women and tears supposedly go hand in hand and this might be due to the high levels of prolactin in women. But that's not the only reason. Society doesn't allow a man to cry. It is seen as a weak sign, a sign that should be present only in women. Women are allowed to cry quite often hence they are considered to be more emotional, but, men on the other hand are allowed to cry only in certain situations. But that should not be the case. Crying is not a sign of weakness, but just a sign of being a normal human being. So next time do not be ashamed when you have tears in your eyes. You are just communicating.
The Terminator: I know now why you cry. But it's something I can never do.
